Sauna Cleaning: The Importance of Maintaining a Clean and Hygienic Sauna
Saunas have been a staple in many households for years, providing a relaxing and rejuvenating escape from the stresses of everyday life. But just like any other place where people gather, saunas can become contaminated with germs, dirt, sweat and other unpleasant substances if not properly cleaned. That’s why it’s crucial to keep your sauna clean and hygienic for the safety and comfort of everyone who uses it. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of sauna cleaning and provide you with helpful tips on how to keep your sauna in tip-top shape.
Earlier I wrote about getting our Sauna heater up to speed (cleaning and inspecting) read about it here. Maintenance is not huge but do plan a moment or two to take care of the Sauna. It will make your life easier knowing it is maintained properly.
The Benefits of a Clean Sauna
A clean sauna offers numerous benefits to those who use it. Here are a few of the most significant advantages:
- Improved Health: Germs and bacteria can easily spread in a sauna if it’s not properly cleaned. Keeping your sauna clean can help to prevent the spread of illnesses and diseases, making it a healthier place to relax.
- Enhanced Aroma: A clean sauna has a fresh and inviting scent that makes the experience more enjoyable. In contrast, a dirty sauna can have an unpleasant odor that detracts from the overall experience.
- Better Aesthetics: A clean sauna looks much better than a dirty one. It’s essential to keep the sauna looking its best so that it remains an inviting place to relax and unwind.
- Increased Durability: Regular cleaning can help to extend the life of your sauna. Dirt and grime can cause damage to the interior and exterior of the sauna, leading to costly repairs and replacement over time.
- Better Experience: A clean sauna is a more pleasant place to be, providing a more comfortable and relaxing experience for those who use it.

Tips for Sauna Cleaning
Cleaning your sauna can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some helpful tips to make the process as straightforward and stress-free as possible:
- Use the Right Products: It’s essential to use the right products when cleaning your sauna. You want to choose products that are safe for the materials used in your sauna and won’t cause damage or discoloration. We use Murphy Oil soap or Pine-Sol… initially I used a cap full of bleach just to add one extra layer of cleaning ability. BUT USE IT ONCE – and RINSE as you don’t want any fumes when the sauna heats up.
- Clean Regularly: The more frequently you clean your sauna, the easier the process will be. Set a regular schedule for cleaning and stick to it to keep your sauna in good condition.
- Pay Attention to High-Traffic Areas: High-traffic areas in your sauna, such as the floor and bench seats, should be cleaned more frequently than other parts of the sauna. Pay extra attention to these areas to keep them clean and hygienic.
- Use a Soft Brush: A soft brush can help to remove dirt and grime from the interior of your sauna without causing damage to the surfaces.
- Focus on the Details: Don’t forget to clean the small details in your sauna, such as the door handles, light fixtures, and control panel. These areas can be easily forgotten, but they can harbor germs and bacteria if not cleaned regularly.
- Ventilate the Sauna: After cleaning your sauna, it’s crucial to ventilate the area to allow the fresh air to circulate. This will help to remove any unpleasant odors and improve the overall quality of the air in the sauna.
The Results of Clean Sauna
A clean and hygienic sauna is essential for the health and comfort of everyone who uses it. One thing to know too, our sauna is a dry or wet sauna i.e. steam. We have a water pale and we add drops of eucalyptus oil to the water. When we are finished for the session, we leave the door open. This fills the entire house with a fresh smell.
We hope this post informs you about a thing or two about owning, cleaning and maintaining a sauna.
Until next time!
